What should you pay?
| Source | Figure |
|---|---|
| Payscale, average base salary (2026) | About $55,000 (10th to 90th percentile: $41,000 to $70,000) (Payscale) |
| ZipRecruiter, median hourly wage (April 2026) | $26.44 per hour (ZipRecruiter) |
| Clinical research associate median (the sponsor and CRO role) | About $78,000 (Augusta University, citing Payscale) |
There is no government salary series specific to coordinators; BLS does not publish a coordinator headcount, so private salary data is the best guide (ACRP). Pay for your market, and remember that the gap to CRA pay is why 85% of departing site staff go to sponsors and CROs (SCRS).
Which skills matter most?
- Organization: visit windows, lab kits, and data deadlines across several studies.
- Patient communication: explaining consent clearly and keeping participants engaged.
- Detail and regulation: source documentation, adverse events, and GCP.
- Clinical skills where the protocol needs them, such as phlebotomy or vitals.
- Flexibility: sites at SCRS favored staff who can pivot across screening, finance, and enrollment (Bourne Partners).
Where do candidates come from?
Medical assistants, nurses, and research assistants from your own practice; recent graduates in health sciences; and experienced coordinators from academic centers. Hiring from inside the practice brings patient familiarity on day one.
How long until a new coordinator is productive?
Plan for months. GCP, system access, and sponsor training come first, then supervised visits, then independent study management. Losing staff can set a study back 6 to 12 months (SCRS), so overlap the new hire with an experienced coordinator where possible.
What makes the new hire stick?
A role that is mostly coordination, not cold recruiting. New coordinators ramp faster when patient sourcing runs on a system, with referral relationships documented and outreach handled, so they can focus on learning the studies. See why coordinators leave.
